Our ApproachWe adopt a person-centred approach to lifelong learning, and believe that education should be individually tailored, flexible and delivered in a variety of environments. By providing 24-hour learning environments we are able to integrate learning completely into all aspects of our person-centred programmes. For example, in our schools and colleges, life, social and communication skills development is combined with the study of the National Curriculum and delivered through the use of meaningful and purposeful activities. Our complementary, eclectic approach to learning combines elements of recognised teaching strategies such as PECS (the Picture Exchange Communication System), SPELL (Structure, Positive, Empathy, Low-arousal, Links) and TEACCH (the Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children). With a focus on maintaining environments that emphasise structure and purpose, these tools promote learning by helping to reduce behaviours that can result from frustration and anxiety.
