Barton School is a DfE-registered independent day school offering adapted national curriculum subjects for Key Stage 2, 3 and 4 pupils, and a vocational-based curriculum for post-16 students called Towards Independence.

The teaching frameworks at Barton School have been specifically designed for children and young people with special educational needs and follow an autism specific approach. Children are assessed against National Curriculum levels and the Pre National Curriculum Scale (P Levels) for those below National Curriculum Level 1.  The students can gain accreditation in school through a range of ASDAN awards and qualifications, Adult Core Curriculum Level 1 and 2 in Numeracy and Literacy and European Computer Driving License (ECDL).  Some students will access courses through local colleges and learning providers and some will attend work experience in the community. Class sizes range from individual tuition to small groups of up to 5.

We use a wide range of approaches, including TEACCH and SPELL, which are individually adapted to the needs of each student. We place particular emphasis on supporting the development of communication skills with visual strategies and high and low tech communication aids.

Generally, these approaches emphasise the need for structure while considering environmental and sensory factors, with the aim of minimising anxiety and distraction.

Each student’s unique programme takes into account their particular strengths, emerging talents and individual learning style. Particular priority is given to the development of communication and interpersonal skills, and the use of regular physical activity to improve overall emotional and physical well being.

Because of our holistic approach to care and education, and the consistency of our approach both in and out of school, learning takes place throughout the waking day – not just in the classroom!
