At Higford School we have a person-centred approach to care that is designed to help students express their needs and wants and to become more independent. Our communication systems include elements of several approaches, tailored according to the preferences of each student, such as Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Makaton. We continually update our library of communication tools to satisfy the ever changing wishes and needs of our students, and the students are encouraged to try new and develop their preferred methods of communication. Outside of school, regular activities are planned to help students develop their skills in different environments. These include trips to the beach, local shops and bowling alley, as well as using our on-site hydrotherapy pool, sensory hub, cinema and sports hall.
The care and education staff teams work together to ensure consistency of approach in meeting the diverse needs of each student. There is a nurse on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide care for children and young people with severe health needs including epilepsy.
Our onsite team includes a specialist Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapist, Education Psychologist and Clinical Psychologist. Our therapists and clinical staff work closely with the education and care staff teams, in classrooms and the wider school environment, to provide fully integrated and consistent programmes. Some of this work takes place in the specifically designed sensory hub, utilising the soft area, wellbeing room, multi sensory room, indoor water play area and the trampoline.
