Education

The School within Options Kinsale has been specially designed to meet the needs of children and young people with a wide range of complex needs, including; autism, Asperger’s and associated learning difficulties.  As well as impaired social or cognitive functioning due to early life trauma and attachment difficulties.

The school provides a wide range of curriculum which is tailored to meet the needs of each individual pupil. Pupils are able to work to nationally recognised educational awards in a broad range of subjects. Pupils are able to access local forest schools, outdoor activities, education and work experience placements. We have links with local schools and colleges which enable us to provide further education opportunities for our pupils.

With an “Excellent” rating in all areas from ESTYN, Options Kinsale offers an adapted and differentiated National Curriculum for Key Stage 2, 3 and 4 students, a vocational-based curriculum for post-16 students. Our teaching frameworks include P Scales which measure ability and achievements below National Curriculum Level 1, and ASDAN, a Curriculum Framework for young people over 14 which covers vocational activities such as horticulture.

During learning sessions we use a variety of complementary techniques and approaches, including elements of SPELL and TEACCH, which are tailored to suit the needs of individual students. Generally, these approaches emphasise the need for structure, whilst considering environmental and sensory factors, with the aim of minimising anxiety and distraction. Written, audio and visual timetables are used depending on the students’ individual needs.
