“I appreciate what Options Kinsale Management, his keyworker and team achieved with Benjie. We couldn’t have got this far without them, that team approach of working so constructively with Social Services and the Health Service has been a massive benefit.
“When Benjie first got there the behaviour continued to be extreme. They had access to a very good psychologist who knew the clinical point of view and the carers who listened and understood his personality issues. People with special needs are no different, there are some people Benjie gets on with and some he doesn’t.
Benjie was in a shared flat to begin with which didn’t work, he needs quiet and he was then given his own flat.
He was put on strong medication at times but the staff team were straight away looking for ways to reduce it and now he’s on very little.
Kinsale staff confirmed that he wasn’t sleeping, something that is difficult to resolve when Benjie always goes to bed but can happily just sit in bed all night awake, not making a sound. The Kinsale team were happy to try everything with Benjie, for example diet, more light, more activity etc. Exercise and being outside worked and they took him for five-mile walks. He has always loved to be outside and walking, and he likes swimming.”
